The two days event which held at Arts and Culture Pavilion, Exhibition and Event Centre Area 10, Garki, Abuja on the 11th and 12th of February 2020, saw over 200 students in attendance from over 20 schools on day one over 1000 students from over 30 schools across FCT on day two as well as thousands of students across all the 36 states in Nigeria.
Mrs. Mette Edokobi, Director, Special Duties and State Operations at National Orientation Agency (NOA) in her opening remark expressed exceptional gratitude to Google for supporting the event, as internet safety is a crucial topic in this ever-growing digital era. She also expressed her gratitude towards Google for collaborating with NOA towards the implementation of the “Digital Safety Parenting” initiative which is set to kick off in Nigeria.
A highlight of the event was when the Government Affairs and Public Policy at Google, Seember Nyager, announced the launch of the “Digital Safety Parenting” program in Nigeria and the “Be Internet Awesome Curriculum” in Nigeria and the One Million Dollar intervention grant from Google to improve digital literacy and skills across Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa.
The first day featured various online safety presentations from the students in the form of drama, poems, vlog, and art. They also watched a short film titled ‘ ‘Feisty John” that tells a story about cyberbullying and its effects.
A highlight of the day was when Parents and Students were challenged to an online safety game called “Are you smarter than a webranger” where their level of knowledge on online safety was tested. And of course, everyone got to go home with lots and lots of gift packs.
On day two the students had the opportunity to go through the “ Be Internet Awesome Experience Centre” they interacted with fun and educative tools from Google in ensuring their safety and responsible use of the internet.
SID 2020 was fun, interactive, educative & inspiring and everyone in attendance had lots to eat and drink before heading back to their schools.
