This year SID 2019 held at Ventures park somewhere in Maitama Abuja, with over 100 students in attendance, thousands of Students from 32 states in Nigeria were not left out either. We also had policy makers from Ministry of Education and Communications in the room together with representatives from Google.
The day started off with a panel discussion where the Webranger Ambassadors launched their online safety APP called WebSafe-X which was created and designed by the Ambassadors and is currently available on Android, IOS and Microsoft play stores.
The highlight of the event was the public announcement of the collaboration between The Public and Private Development Centre and Nigerian Educational Research Council (NERDC) to adopt an online safety course in Nigerian school curriculum, The initiative which is supported by Google aims to ensure that every Nigerian child has knowledge of how to be safe online.
The Students present had a lot of fun during the break out sessions, they were required to creatively pass across an online safety information using art, drama, spoken words and skits. The webranger clubs present at the event also presented very funny but educational drama’s on how to be safe online specifically on sharing personal information.
The students were also treated to a screening of the Nigerian Webrangers Documentary while they snacked on popcorn and drinks. The Documentary gave them first hand information on how to become webrangers, it benefits and what it entails.
The webrangers programme is an initiative of Google where young people are termed “Web Superheroes” and are required to save the internet from danger in fun, creative but also educational ways.
