Movie Review of Half of a Yellow Sun as it breaks Nigerian Movie Box Office Record


Due to the classic novel and the hype surrounding the release of Half of a Yellow Sun (HOYS),my high expectations were sadly cut short (in my opinion). Although the actors gave a stellar performance, the reason why we fell in love with the book in the first place was not fully captured. Found a review that came close to my thoughts on this movie, read here and let me know if you agree or disagree with the writer.

In other news, HOYS has set a new first weekend box office record in Nigeria. The record came from showing the movie in 15 cinemas across Nigeria in its first three days, with Lagos cinemas topping the charts.

‘HOYS is expected to also break the record of the highest grossing movie in Nigeria, being the country of the author of the book, and the director and executive producers of the movie.

HOYS is at the number one spot in Nigerian cinemas, ahead of Marvel Studios Guardian of Galaxy. The movie which has grossed well over N10Million has been able to surpass other Nigerian box office trailblazers like Last Flight to Abuja (N8.35Million), Phone Swap (N3.72Million), Maami (N3.30Million), and The Return of Jennifer (N10Million).

According to the C.E.O of FilmOne Distribution, Mr. Kene Mkparu, the distributors of the movie, “we have always maintained that the success of HOYS is the success of Nollywood. If HOYS succeeds and from the figures we have, it will succeed, it signifies success for Nollywood
